You've already sent the email. You re-read it in the sent folder anyway. Then you ask a colleague if it 'sounded okay'. They say it's fine. For about a minute, it is fine. Then a small voice asks: but were they just being nice?
And you're back where you started, holding the same question you supposedly just answered. The answer landed. It just didn't stay.
One more confirmation
Once there's an answer, you go looking for one more confirmation that it's really okay. There's nothing strange about wanting to be sure. What's strange is how the wanting survives the being-sure — how the reassurance lands, and then, reliably, the need to check comes back.
If a check actually delivered certainty, you'd check once and be done. The fact that you're not done is the clue.
The question isn't the question
Here's what's actually happening. The question often isn't the real question — it's a safety behaviour. 'Did that sound okay' isn't a request for information you lack. The information is already there. It's a move to discharge the discomfort of not feeling sure.
And it has a side effect that runs the wrong way. Every check quietly teaches the system that it couldn't have known on its own — that certainty is something you fetch from outside, not something you're allowed to generate yourself. So the doubt that sent you checking gets a little stronger each time you obey it.
That's the trap: checking soothes the doubt and feeds it in the same motion. Short relief, no closure. The certainty never sticks because the checking is the thing keeping it from setting.
The better first move
The way out isn't to never ask. It's to ask once — then let a decision rule do the rest. 'I'll send it after one read-through' is a rule. 'I'll keep checking until I feel sure' is a trap, because the feeling is exactly what the checking prevents from arriving.
What backfires, especially for the people around you, is supplying the repeated reassurance on demand. It's kind in the moment and it strengthens the loop — every confirmation given is one more lesson that the answer had to come from them.
What to watch
One number tells the story: how often you re-check after you've already got an adequate answer. That count, not the content of any single worry, is the thing to bring down.
Ask once, then let a decision rule do the rest. The certainty you keep going back for was already in your hands — the going-back is what kept knocking it loose.
